Grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) are larger than the common seal, which is the other species found in UK waters. This mammal can live up to 30-40 years and can be found in a variety of habitats. Grey seals are predators that hunt for fish out to sea. However, they can also be found hauled onto rocks or even beaches. Especially when they are resting and breeding. This species of seal is found all around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. They tend to live on all UK coastlines but particularly around exposed and rocky areas. During winter-spring time they can be spotted on coves around Cornwall with small pups. Grey seals tend to gather together for protection from stormy weather and to make sure their pups are safe. It is essential that humans give the seals space and do not disturb them. If they get spooked, it can cause stress and sometimes resuting in severe injury. The seals will rampage into the sea which can be deadly for small pups or injuries from rocks.
Despite their conservation status (least concern) and inreasing population trends. They are a globally rare species. There are more red squirrels in the UK than there are grey seasl!
